Monday, January 29, Response Paper: Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention Thomas Friedman has come up with the Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention in which he speculates that two countries that are part of the same supply chain will never engage in war with one another because they depend too much on each other.
Friedman explains that when two countries are part of the same supply chain, they rely on each other in order to produce the goods and services that have allowed their economy to grow. Once a country lives under these standards, and feels what it is like to be part of a thriving economy, they will do anything to keep the bonds of the chain.
Because these countries are not tied to any supply chain, they are more readily violent and aggressive with other countries. Friedman goes on to explain that this theory alone cannot end all violence in the flattening world.
Although in most cases countries feel tied to this contract of the supply chain, there will always be some who think differently than most level-headed human beings. There will always be those few individuals that are able to be convinced to participate in suicide bombings for example.
Friedman believes that advances in technology will help slow down cases of terrorism. He does, however, go on to explain that there is more to it than just that. He stresses that we must start by being more imaginative. We need someone in our community thinking as the terrorists think; we need someone there to imagine the absolute worst and sickening thing that a terrorist could plan to do to our country.
Overall, Friedman emphasizes the importance of setting a global example. It is our responsibility to create a global community in which everyone feels welcome and necessary. As in his ebay example, it is important for people to feel ownership and importance in their community. When one feels that they are vital to global success, they are more likely to contribute to it.
By setting a good example, other countries look to us and see our success, and therefore strive for the same."The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention argues that no two countries that are both part of the same global supply chain will ever fight a war as long as they are each part of that supply chain." - Thomas Friedman quotes from r-bridal.com Two authors go over the subject of one country understanding another: Journalist Thomas Friedman in his text “The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention”, and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright in her text “Faith and D.
